Literacy Grant to Local Schools
In 2008 the Rotary Club of Gawler Light offered for the
first time a grant of $2000 to local schools with Junior Primary students
to support Literacy improvement. The club recognises the personal and
community value of high literacy skill and wishes to contribute to this
cause. The Rotary Club of Gawler Light invited interested school in the
Gawler catchment to submit application. The grant offer is to assist
a school to support Junior Primary students who are currently below the
minimum standard in Literacy achievement and who do not currently receive
support from the school’s funding organization
The 2008 grant was awarded to Gawler Primary School who used the money to
establish “Literacy Bags” for their Junior Primary students. Each Literacy
bag contained a children’s book along with stimulus materials related to
the book. The books were from both the fiction and non fiction categories
and stimulus materials included toys, construction models, puzzles etc.
The school reported that the bags were a very successful innovation in
stimulating children to read and involve family members in supporting
interest in reading.
The club hopes to offer literacy grants to local school annually.
